Sam Gamgee's Mashed Potatoes
“Sam: “What we need is a few good taters.”
Sméagol: “What’s taters? Precious, what’s taters? Huh?”
Sam: “Po-ta-toes! Boil them, mash them, stick them in a stew. Lovely big golden chips with a nice piece of fried fish.”
An easy and creamy mashed potatoes recipe inspired by Sam Gamgee in The Two Towers.
If you are a fan of The Lord of the Rings, then you probably know that potatoes, or "taters" in "hobbytish", are a staple in the Hobbit community. Hobbits are very fond of food anyway, and as Tolkien himself wrote: "If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world." I myself would like the world to be a merrier place indeed.
Tolkien wrote about 6 meals: breakfast, second breakfast, elevensies, luncheon, afternoon tea, dinner and supper, and because there are no limits to the imagination of the Lord of the Rings fans, there is a website where people can submit and rate recipes .
In general, all hobbits are foodies - let's not forget Merry and Pippin getting worried because Aragorn didn't know about elevensies - but Samwise Gamgee is the one hobbit that occupies our blog today. He is following Frodo to Mount Doom to get rid of the ring, reluctantly, and the food is a way for him to be connected to home, which he misses so much. In the scene below, from where we get our inspiration, he first mentions all the ways potatoes can be cooked and then argues with Gollum about the best way to cook a rabbit (by the way, a rabbit is an ingredient we won't be using in the blog!). Sam also uses food to motivate Frodo at the end of The Return of the King, when he tells him to remember all the delicious foods they can have back at the Shire.
Mashed potatoes are easy to make and easy to eat. Use them as a side dish with almost any meat.
