Going to visit family in Costa Rica
Only when you are away you discover how valuable family time is. I live very far from them, in another continent! And given the advanced stage of my pregnancy (the third trimester is looming), I won't be able to fly this year to spend Christmas with them like I've done for the last 7 years.
This makes me sad and it fills me with nostalgia as I remember what a special time are the Christmas holidays for my family, and all the traditions I won't be able to recreate here in South Africa. But I am happy at the same time because this will be the first time I spend this special time with my husband and our unborn baby. Next year we will be reunited again!
See the snow for the first time
Snow is something that some people take for granted, but I've never seen the snow; I haven't even been to a place that is "extremely cold". I grew up in Costa Rica where the coldest weather in the Central Valley (where my family lives) could be maybe 12 degrees, and there isn't even 4 seasons, just a rainy and a dry season. Here in South Africa, there are 4 seasons, albeit not like in the Northern Hemisphere. There is a place here in the Karoo (a semi-desert region) where it snows during winter (April-August), Sutherland, but it is quite a drive from where we stay. There, they also have the biggest telescope in the Southern Hemisphere, so I think it wouldn't be a waste to go. Regardless, what I've heard is that the snow there is different from the "real" snow, the one that falls in Europe or North America; this is baffling to me! So still, I'd prefer to go to Norway and see that cold, white, beautiful snow for myself!
Spend Christmas and New Year in Italy
Or Europe, for that matter (did I mention I'd love to see the snow?). There are so many things to see during this time of the year, and Christmas markets are one of the things I'd love to experience. Regardless of religion, I think it is the experience of a lifetime to attend Christmas Mass at the Vatican, let alone seeing all the Christmas concerts: what about a Baroque Christmas Concert in a Capuchin crypt? Here is a sample to get you excited:
Adopt a Penguin
I was involved with an organization called Sanncob when I first moved to South Africa a few years ago, as a volunteer helping the penguins. The African penguin is a threatened species, that is why Sanncob's mission is so close to my heart. Every year in October we go to Simonstown to see the release of rehabilitated penguins into the wild, which is a very emotional and exciting moment! You can help Sanncob and its important mission by adopting and naming an African penguin, as a gift for yourself or a loved one!
I prefer a million times better a gift that was made by you than something that was bought in a store unless it is a very thoughtful gift. Don't even get me started with gift cards: hate them with a passion! To give a good gift you only need to know a little bit about the person, and only then is when you realized that you barely know someone. That is why something picked or made especially for me by you it is so important!
Give the gift of travel
This would be the only type of gift card I think it's worth it: give gift of a unique experience. A few months ago I discovered Jubel. This is a website that sells personalized travel experiences. We wanted to use them to plan a trip to Vietnam we've been wanting to take, but it will have to wait a few months now, so we can include our baby! Currently, they have a gift card that you can give to your loved ones and help them with the traveling dreams!
