Chicken Shawarma from The Avengers

Chicken Shawarma from The Avengers

Once upon a time, I was a huge fan of the Avengers. Not only the Avengers but all the Marvel movies. I'd go to watch them at the movies, buy DVD's to watch them later and comment with whoever wanted to hear about it. That's how I came to know about the secret Avenger's scene where they all eat in silence at a chicken shawarma joint, as suggested by Tony Stark.

I also wondered for a while what is this shawarma thing but luckily here in South Africa it is very easy to find this kind of exotic foods. South Africa is a very diverse country, with settlers coming from the Netherlands, India and even Malaysia, their history is very interesting! There is also a lot of Muslim and middle eastern people so it is not difficult to find shawarma joints everywhere.

The basic shawarma recipe is quite simple: meat, vegetables and assorted spices, which gives a lot of space for imagination and creativity. The one I tried and is the one we recreated here had a delicious yogurt sauce that I just can't have enough. I am guessing you can also use tzatziki with it!

For this recipe, I left the chicken marinating overnight and the next day the aromas were heavenly! I recommend you use real lemons instead of store-bought lemon juice, it makes a world of a difference! For garnishing, I like to add spring onions, but just because I am very fond of them, you can use whatever you like. I also prefer to leave the onions uncooked, and even better if it's red onions. and Lastly, we use brown pita bread but I didn't like that much. I know it is healthier but to me it tastes better with the regular pita bread.
